Data Modeling

What Is Data Modeling?

A data model defines the business under consideration in terms of the entities about which information needs to be recorded and tracked, the relationships between these entities, and the attributes that describe them. A relational data model is depicted as a finite collection of two-dimensional column-and-row tables. Relational data models are simple, precise and flexible: easy for people to understand, unambiguous enough for computers, and powerful enough to easily adapt to changing business requirements.

Data Modeling Using Extended Relational Analysis

Extended Relational Analysis (ERA) was the first, and is still the best standard relational database design methodology on the market. There is no faster, more consistent, more structured, or more understandable way to develop a mathematically normalized data model. Interaction between users and developers is direct, meaningful, and in plain English.

Why Is It Useful?

A shared non-technical understanding by both business users and technical personnel of all information needed to support the business results in:

  • Faster system development
  • Correct, consistent and complete data
  • Less database administration
  • A high degree of referential integrity

Shared Vision Workshop and Data Modeling

Gemini Systems performs data modeling using ERA in its rigorous Shared Vision Workshop to ensure complete and accurate business requirements, dramatically reducing the risk inherent in developing complex software systems.
